A region can lose its topsoil twice. Once to the river, and once to the cities that take its talented young people and never send them back.
Our office is in Kurichi, a village near Kumbakonam in the Kaveri delta. Almost everyone here was hired from this district or the villages around it, and trained in-house. The enterprise systems we ship to ten countries are built a short walk from paddy fields.
This follows the argument Sridhar Vembu has made for years: world-class technology does not need a metro to be built in. Holding talent in place means fewer households pushed into cities that are already full, incomes that go further where they are earned, and — for clients — a team that does not turn over every eighteen months.

Why we build from here.
Every village is different. The people are different, the challenges are different, and even their willingness to try something new can be different. So whatever you do has to be built for that particular place; there cannot be one model that you simply reproduce everywhere.
When you give people an opportunity and they can see that you genuinely care about them, the effort that comes back is remarkable. People here will tell me directly when an idea won't work, they will stay until the work is done, and they behave as though this is their own company that they are building.

The place
A wedding hall, in a village, with a temple behind it.
The office is a village marriage hall. The room that held the wedding party now holds the desks, and the ceiling is far higher than any office needs. Seventy people work in it, and most of them grew up within an hour of this room.
